Statement on Targeted Shootings of Rep. Melissa Hortman and Sen. John Hoffman

We are devastated and horrified to hear about the assassination of Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark this morning and the attempted assassination of Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. 

Speaker Hortman was a previous NCEL Board member and a dedicated public servant. Senator Hoffman is an active member of NCEL and the Mississippi River Legislative Caucus and a champion for the environment.

We’re holding Speaker Hortman’s family, Senator Hoffman, his wife, and family in our thoughts. Speaker Hortman leaves behind a remarkable legacy and will be incredibly missed.

Political violence and the targeting of elected officials has no place in our democracy.
